URLQ Season 2011 - Round 1 & 2

The QUT Trouts are the only undefeated team after the opening two rounds of the URLQ season, with the 2010 Premiers again looking to be the team to beat as the URLQ enters its 23rd season.

After holding out the Griffith Gold Coast Panthers in a physical grand final rematch last Wednesday night at Nathan, the Trouts made it 11 straight victories courtesy of a last minute forfeit by the UQ Hounds at Nathan last night.

In other Round 2 action, the battle of Griffith drew a large and boisterous crowd, with the visiting Gold Coast Panthers taking the points with a 20-6 victory.

In what was a game of two halves, the Dragons controlled play saw them take a 6-0 advantage into the half-time break, courtesy of a tenacious try to forward Kurt Vogel in the 23rd minute.

But it was the Panthers newfound composure that saw them dominate the second stanza, with dynamic utility Carl Thurgood swatting aside defenders to open the visitors scoring in the 50th minute.

From there, the Panthers played smart wet weather football, with captain-coach Nathan Land controlling play through a booming 40/20 kick and two barge over tries.

The Dragons enjoy the round 3 bye next week, while the Panthers play host to the UQ Hounds and the Trouts make the daunting road trip to Gatton to clash with the Bulls.
