An all new season of the URLQ kicked off on Wednesday night, with the 2010 season welcoming the return of a Gold Coast Griffith University team.

The QUT Trouts beat the UQ Hounds 32 – 12 in the opening round of the 2010 university competition, with UQ Gatton unfortunately regretfully forfeiting their first round match to the Griffith Dragons.

However the Hounds, to their credit, fought their way back into the game and once they got some possession, were able to score 2 tries of their own. 

With the Hounds able to convert both of their tries and the Trouts unsuccessful with both of theirs, the Hounds went to the half time break 12 – 8 in front. 

After the break, the Trouts scored straight away to eliminate the deficient and get back into the lead and from then on, they ran away with the game putting on 24 unanswered points.

The amount of possession went the way of the Trouts in the second half and the amount of defensive work the Hounds had to do, let the outside backs of the Trouts run in another 4 tries before the end with the best try coming from Steve Young, setup with a beautiful flick pass from centre Richard Kirkbright, which sealed the win for the Trouts.  

Special mention goes to David Horne who played strongly for the Trouts and was rewarded with 3 tries.  

Both teams will be better for the run, with the Hounds going into next weeks grand final replay with the Griffith Dragons and the Trouts to play newcomers the Griffith Gold Coast Bears in a double header at Nathan.
