 Dragons and Hounds breathe fire

Free flowing attack dominated Round four of the URLQ competition at Griffith University’s Nathan campus last night, as both the Griffith Dragons and UQ Hounds chalked up comprehensive victories.

The Dragons have overtaken the Bulls as competition leaders after four rounds thanks to the home side’s 56-6 spanking of the visiting Bulls, whilst the UQ Hounds showed that they are still a force, upsetting the QUT Trouts 32-14 in a fiery encounter.

Griffith’s ten try romp was dominated by yet another outstanding display from skipper Alan Kemp, with the burly prop’s hat-trick of tries heavily applauded by the small throng of vocal fans in attendance.

Spurred on by their rowdy home crowd, the Dragon’s stifling defensive resolve forced their opponent’s into committing a glutton of first half handling errors. The Bulls had no answer to the Dragons onslaught, with the home side converting a handy 28-6 half-time advantage into a fifty point drubbing.

While Kemp provided the muscle, five-eighth Ben Ah Sam provided the finesse through his deceptive speed and footwork, with the spritely number six causing headaches for the Bulls with every touch. Energetic fullback Luke Schoem also enjoyed a big night out, booting eight goals for a personal match tally of 16 points.

The UQ Hounds showcased their array of attacking skills in the second match of the Nathan double-header, racing in six tries to defeat the QUT Trouts 32-14 in a tough encounter.

Crunching defence dominated the opening exchanges, as the hulking Trouts forward pack attempted to dominate their smaller rivals from the outset.

But it was the Hounds that posted first points courtesy of a period of sustained pressure, with fullback Greg Tobin crossing for the first of his two tries in the 15th minute.

The Hounds lead stretched to 12-0 less then two minutes later however, with UQ centre Trevor McLeary touching down off the back of a magnificent break from the resulting kick-off.

A strong kicking game from UQ hooker Rueben Butler kept the Trouts pinned inside their own half, with the nippy rake showing tremendous skill to regather his own grubber for a 22-0 Hounds half-time lead.

However a pumped up Trouts outfit showed their intentions straight after the break, crossing for two quick tries to narrow the gap to 22-10 after 45 minutes.

Both sides exchanged further four-pointers before a try to Hounds replacement Andrew Geldard got the UQ boys home, 32-14.
