Hounds and Dragons to face off in Final

Langlands Park will play host to the 2008 Universities Rugby League Queensland (URLQ) grand final on Sunday August 24, with the Griffith Universities Dragons looking to cause a massive upset when they battle it out with the University of Queensland Hounds for this season’s crown.

Having grabbed the minor premiership courtesy of an undefeated season, the Hounds will start firm favourites to clinch the 2008 title. With the Hounds impenetrable defence only allowing a miserly 40 points against all season, the boys from UQ will be particularly hard to beat as they strive to claim their ninth URLQ crown.

But the Dragons will be primed to stage an upset as they gun for their fourth consecutive URLQ title this Sunday, with the Griffith University team rocketing into premiership contention thanks to their inspirational 62-12, major semi-final demolition of the USQ Ironbarks last Monday night.

Brisbane Broncos forward Nick Kenny will be on hand to conduct the official presentation ceremony and post match function, with the 26-year old ex-URLQ representative keen to inspire the players onto further honours.

“I’m excited to get out and support the competition that gave me my first break,” said Kenny.

“It was from playing in the URLQ competition that I got my start in the Queensland Cup.”

Kenny represented the University of Queensland in the URLQ competition whilst undertaking a physiotherapy course in 2003, and since graduating has gone onto represent the Broncos in 47-games since his NRL debut in 2005.

The rugged prop admits that the URLQ competition was a welcome distraction from his rigorous study schedule, with Kenny hoping to provide a source of inspiration for players who wish to combine their sporting careers with tertiary studies.

“A lot of guys are lost to rugby league when studying at University - the Universities Rugby League competition keeps that affiliation with the game going,” said Kenny.

The URLQ Grand Final will kick-off at 3pm at Langlands Park, Coorparoo this Sunday, with Kenny to conduct the presentation ceremony in the Easts Leagues club from 5pm.
